1.bank, shore, beach, coat

• bank意思为岸，主要指河岸、河堤。

The city of London is on the banks of the River Thames.伦敦城在泰晤士河两岸。

Shore意思是岸，指海、湖、大河的岸，常含有与水域相对之意。

The ship stopped a little way off the shore.

这船停在离岸不远的地方。

• beach意思是海滩、湖滩，主要指涨潮时有水，退潮时无水，有沙子或卵石的海滩或湖滩。

They are taking a sunbath on the beach.

他们在海滩上晒太阳。

• cost意思是海岸，主要指陆与水相接的沿线，即海岸线，作为水域边界。

There are many ports on the east coast of our land.我国东海岸上有许多港口。

2.room\place

• room表示人和物体所占的空间或场所，为不可数名词，可用much,little等词修饰；常用短语有take up room占地方及make room for给...让出地方 。

• place指人们从事各种活动的地方、场所、位置。

Hangzhou is nice place to live in.

杭州是居住的好地方。

3.class\lesson

• class表示“课”，指以四十（五十....）分钟为单位的课堂教学活动，也可指学校的班级或全体学生。

We have no classes on Sundays.我们星期天不上课。

Class Two is a big class.（2）班是一个大班。

• lesson的意思是“课文；功课；课”，着重指教学内容。lesson作课时可与class换用。

After school, the boys play first, and then do their lessons.

男孩子放学后先玩后做功课。

We took/had five lessons/classes every week.

我们每周上五节英语课。

4.cloth, clothes, clothing, dress

• cloth指做衣服用的材料（布料、毛料、丝绸等），为物质名词，不可数，没有复数形式。

How much cloth does it take to make a blouse for the girl？

给这个女孩做件衬衫需要多少布料？

• clothes统称各种衣服，包括外套、西装、衬衣、裤子、裙子、鞋、帽等，不能和具体数目的数词连用，但可用many, these, those, a few, my等词修饰，作主语时谓语用复数。一套衣服为a suit of clothes.

Many movie starts have their clothes made in Paris.许多电影明星在巴黎定制服装。

I bought two suits of clothes yesterday.

昨天我买了两套衣服。

• clothing是衣服、服装的总称，集合名词，只有单数形式，是区别于其他事物的抽象概念，作主语时谓语用单数。说一件衣服可用an article of clothing 和a piece of clothing.

Our clothing protects us from the cold.

衣服帮助我们御寒。

An overcoat is an article/ a piece of clothing.

大衣是一件衣服。

• dress指外面穿着的衣服，有修饰的意味，尤指妇女的连衣裙或某种特殊场合下穿着的礼服。

Mary paid 200 dollars for an evening dress.

玛丽花200美元买了件晚礼服。

5.date\day

• date指具体的日期。

Date of birth October 22nd,1992

出生日期：1992年10月22日

What’s the date today？今天几号？

• day表示“一日；白天”，可指从日出到日落之“白昼”，也可指一昼夜。

He works eight hours a day.

他一天工作八小时。

What day is it today？

今天星期几？
