这些玉米爬上了房顶

是母亲装，父亲举，我抻着绳子拽

这些玉米，就可以叫粮食了

这些玉米长在地里叫庄稼

这些玉米还叫种子的时候

搅在一车又一车的驴粪里入土

胶皮轱辘压，黑驴蹄子踩，青石磙子碾

一场小南风儿吹过，一场小春雨儿下过

这些玉米拱翻了土坷垃

伸胳膊蹬腿地蹿，开始叫秧苗的这些玉米

费父亲的神，操母亲的心

打垄怕密了，耪草怕伤了，追肥怕少了

晴天怕蔫了，下雨怕涝了，刮风怕折了

这些玉米甩缨子，挂浆了，定粒了

父亲一遍遍跑，撕开皮掐，搓下粒嚼

终于爬上了房顶，这些玉米

母亲开始褪秸杆上的叶子，这些玉米

叶子火软，是烙饼，摊鸡蛋的好引柴

秸杆的火硬，母亲一捆捆绑扎

垛上垛，用两头拴着砖头的绳子系起来

终于叫粮食了，这些玉米

玉米挤着玉米一层层叠一层层垒

把沉甸甸的房顶压住，父亲挨着母亲打着的呼噜

These Corn

These corn finally climbed up the roof,

packed by Mother, lifted by Father, and hoisted up by me.

These corn are our provisions,

but they were called crops when still in the soil.

When they were nothing but seeds,

we mixed them with donkey manure, cartloads of it,

and pressed them into the soil with rubber tires, donkey hoofs, and a bluestone drum roller.

After a southerly breeze and a light spring rain,

these seeds pushed up clods of soil,

stretched their arms and legs, sent out tender shoots,

and began to steer Father’s thoughts and occupy Mother’s heart:

careful about spacing, gentle to rake, generous to feed,

hope the sun won’t scorch, the rain won’t flood, and the wind won’t break them.

When the corn began to silk, milk, and line up the kernels, Father would

inspect them often, check under the husks, and twist off a kernel to taste.

Now they are all on the roof, these corn.

Mother has stripped all the leaves from the stalks, these corn.

The leaves burn slow, a great tinder for flapjack pancakes and omelette;

on the contrary, the stalks make torrid fire, and are bundled up,

piled up, and secured by a rope with brick weights.

Now we call them our daily bread, these corn.

Each corn snuggles up to another corn, sandwiched between other corn,

sitting stately on the roof that covers Father’s head, snoring next to Mother.
