Hey! Hey! Hey! 我是RJ高晓龙,欢迎来到今天的「1MinuteEnglish」。
“Dead”,你一定对这个词再熟悉不过了!在刚刚开始学英语的时候一定都会学到这个词。众所周知,它是“死亡”的意思。但是除了用来形容“死亡”,它其实还有另外一种跟“死亡”完全无关的,非常地道的表达方式!今天的文章我就来叫你关于“dead”的另外一种用法!
►►今日重点词汇:Dead
Ahhh “dead” … such a scary word. Or maybe dark, or mysterious, or evil? Or… well, maybe just a word. A word that usually means ‘death’ (that’s the noun) – that opposite of alive – that something or someone is not living anymore. But did you know it also has another meaning? Itcan also mean “very, extremely, really, completely, totally, and so on.
哇“dead”,好恐怖的一个词啊~呃… 或者说它是黑暗的,神秘的,邪恶的词呢?又或者… 好啦好啦,它只是一个普通的单词。“Dead”通常指的是“死亡”(名词),“生存”的反义词,形容某人或者某事已不再存在。但是你知道这个词还有其它的表达方式吗?除了用来形容“死亡”之外,它其实还可以用来表示“非常”、“极端”、“超级”、“完全地”、“完整地”等等。
Normally, “dead” (the dead and alive kind) is an adjective, and it’s pretty simple to use. The fly is dead, for example. But if we want to use it with the other meaning, it becomes an adverb, and then we put a different adjective after it. So now, “dead” juststresses or emphases the new adjective.
通常情况下,“dead”是一个形容词,使用起来很简单。举个例子:“The fly is dead.” 但如果我们想用另外一种方式来使用,它则变成了一个副词,并且还会在它后面加上另外一个形容词。在这个时候,“dead”就变成是用来强调或者增强跟随在它后面的形容词的语气。
►►举一些生动的例子,让你更清楚地学会如何使用
Steve was dead luckyto get that job.
史蒂夫非常幸运地得到了那份工作。
Morty was dead tiredbut grandpa Rick made him get up anyway.
莫蒂已经超级累了,但里克爷爷还是让他早点起床。
Marge: You’re joking right?
玛姬:你在开玩笑对吧?
Lisa: No way, I’m dead serious.
丽萨:怎么可能,我非常认真好吗?
I’m never listening to Meg again, her advice was dead wrong.
我再也不听梅格的建议了,她的建议根本就是错的!
Bart was dead certainhe could make it to school on time by riding his skateboard.
巴特死定了,他只有踩着滑板才能准时到学校。
After the evil teacher entered the class, the room was dead silent.
在这个恐怖的老师走进教室后,整间教室变得无比安静。
I’m dead broke, could I borrow $100? I’ll pay ya back next week, I promise!
我真的快穷死了,能借我100块吗?我保证下周还你!
Stan: Why was Cartman dead drunkin the bar last night?
史丹:为什么昨天卡特曼昨天在酒吧里醉得不省人事?
Cannie: Cause is girlfriend just broke up with him.
康妮:因为他女朋友刚跟他分手。
►►不是所有形容词前面都能加上“dead”
By the way, pay attention to the adjectives I used “dead” with, as we can’t use it with just every adjective in the dictionary. It would sound a bit weird to say “I’m dead hungry” or “She is dead beautiful.” I can’t think of any “rules” at the moment, but the adjectives I used in my examples are the most common ways we use “dead,” so I suggest sticking to those.
噢对了,注意上面的例句中放在“dead”后面的形容词,其实不是每个形容词前面都能加上“dead”的。比如我在这2个词前面加上一个“dead”你看看效果:“I’m dead hungry”、“She is dead beautiful.” 怎么样,是不是听起来很奇怪?我暂时还不知道如何给“dead”的其它使用方式定个规则,但是上面例句中我所用的形容词都是一些最常见的,可以用“dead”来增强它们语气的形容词,我建议你先把这些用法学会。
►►试着使用今天学习的内容,把下面这段话翻译成中文:
Ah, good, I’m finally finished with another article. I’m dead tiredand I should go to bed, but I’mdead seriousabout achieving my goal writing 3 articles tonight. My room isdead silentright now too, so I better turn on some music while I finish the other 2. Have a goodnight ya’ll.
