庄子·秋水·英译
秋水时至,百川灌河,泾流之大,两涘渚崖之间,不辩牛马。于是焉河伯欣然自喜,以天下之美尽在己。顺流而东行,至于北海;东面而视,不见水端。于是焉河伯始旋其面目,望洋向若而叹曰:“野语有之曰,‘闻道百,以为莫己若’者,我之谓也。且夫我尝闻少仲尼之闻而轻伯夷之义者,始吾弗信;今我睹子之难穷也,吾非至于子之门则殆矣,吾长见笑于大方之家。”
北海若曰:“井蛙不可以语于海者,拘于虚也;夏虫不可以语于冰者,笃于时也;曲士不可以语于道者,束于教也。今尔出于崖涘,观于大海,乃知尔丑,尔将可与语大理矣。天下之水,莫大于海。万川归之,不知何时止而不盈;尾闾泄之,不知何时已而不虚。春秋不变,水旱不知。此其过江河之流,不可为量数。而吾未尝以此自多者,自以比形于天地而受气于阴阳,吾在于天地之间,犹小石小木之在大山也,方存乎见少,又奚以自多?计四海之在天地之间也,不似礨空之在大泽乎?计中国之在海内,不似稊米之在太仓乎?号物之数谓之万,人处一焉;人卒九州,谷食之所生,舟车之所通,人处一焉。此其比万物也,不似毫末之在马体乎?五帝之所连,三王之所争,仁人之所忧,任士之所劳,尽此矣。伯夷辞之以为名,仲尼语之以为博,此其自多也,不似尔向之自多于水乎?”(节选)

Autumnal floods came with that season when hundreds of tributaries poured into the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Yellow River, whose broad and swift currents rushed along the banks, between the sand shoals, with the cattle almost indiscernible across the river. So the god of the river was very glad and complacent, thinking that he was endowed with all the beauty of the world. As he went downstream to the east, approaching the North Sea, he looked eastward and saw no bounds of the waters. Then he turned his face upward to the god of the North Sea and said with a sigh, “The folk saying ‘Having lots of knowledge, one is apt to think he is head and shoulders above all others.’ must refer to people of my ilk. I have heard of some cases in which Confucius was thought to have scanty knowledge and Boyi was also despised for his righteousness. At first I disbelieved it. But now, seeing your immensity and infinitude, I have come to know the truth. Without visiting you in your home, I would have run the risk of being long ridiculed by wise people.”
The god of the North Sea said, “You cannot talk with a frog in a deep well about the sea, because he is limited by his circumstances. You cannot talk with an insect of summer about ice, because he adheres to his knowledge confined to that season. You cannot talk with a provincial scholar about the ways of the world, because he is restricted by his education. Now that you have come out of the restraining banks and viewed the open sea, you are conscious of your meanness and must be amenable to my reasoning on the great truth of the universe. A body of water in the world is never greater than a sea, for thousands of rivers pour into it. No one knows when this will cease and when it will ever overflow for its fullness. It is said that at the Weilü Boulder the sea water is constantly drained, and no one knows when this will stop and when the sea will dry up. For it never undergoes any change with the seasons, nor experiences any droughts or inundations. Its water volume immeasurably exceeds that of the rivers. Nevertheless, as the god of the sea, I have never been pretentious, for I know that I was shaped by heaven and earth and born of the negative and positive elements, thinking that I am but a pebble or a tiny piece of wood on a large mountain. I can only be ashamed of my smallness. How can I feel proud and complacent? Just imagine, are not seas in the universe comparable to small cavities in a vast lake? Is China in this huge world not to be likened to a grain in a barn? Things on earth are counted by the million in terms of species. Man is but one in the million. All people in the country feed on corn and travel by vehicles, and a person is but one of them. In comparison with the infinite multitude of living creatures, is he not just like a hair on a horse?
The consecutive reigns of the Five Emperors, the contentions of the Three Kings, the worries of kind people and the labor of able men all amount to this same thing. Boyi excused himself from the throne and became famous; Confucius made some remarks and was reputed as an erudite. Being thus conceited, would they not be the same as you who used to be proud of your waters? ”(谢百魁 译)
