There Are No Vans To me, what Thanksgiving really means is giving good thanks, not eating turkey. By the time I was 18 I had created my Thanksgiving ritual (惯例). I would go out shopping and buy enough food for one or two families. Then I would dress like a delivery boy, go to the poorest neighborhood and just knock on a door, and would always include a note saying “All that I ask in return is that you take good enough care of yourself so that someday you can do the same thing for someone else.” I have received more from this annual ritual than I have from any amount of money I've ever earned, especially one such experience in New York City. Several years ago I was in New York City with my newly married wife during Thanksgiving. She was sad because we were not with our family. Normally she would be home decorating the house for Christmas, but we were stuck here in a hotel room. I said, “Honey, look, why don't we decorate some lives today instead of some trees?” When I told her what I always do on Thanksgiving, she got excited. I said, “Let's go someplace where we can really appreciate who we are, what we are able to do and what we can really give. Let's go to the poor neighborhood Harlem and feed some people there in need. We'll go buy enough food for six or seven families for 30 days. We've got enough. Let's go do it!” We started by getting a van (货车), but there seemed no vans in all of New York City. The rent-a-car places were all out of vans. My wife was disappointed, and I said, “Look, the bottom line is that if we want something, we can make it happen! All we have to do is take action. There are plenty of vans here in New York City. Look down at the street. Do you see all those vans? Let's go get one!” My wife agreed and we took action. Paragraph 1: We tried stopping vans as they were driving down the street. Paragraph 2: Eventually a van drove up and the driver said yes. Paragraph 1: We tried stopping vans as they were driving down the street. 1.(写drivers的反应)(三选一)However, they came, they saw and they sped up, only to leave ash and dirt dancing in the air.Yet the drivers either give a cold shoulder to our frantically-waving hand(疯狂挥手), or sped past us, drowning our hope in the deafening(震耳欲聋的) roar of engines. However, as if exerted a curse, welcoming us were either vans zooming away with thunderous roars, some drivers' scornful words, or others' loudly and impatiently pressing their horns, leaving us dumbfounded(目瞪口呆的). 2.(我和妻子的情绪)(二选一)Fingers numbed(麻木,此处为动词)by the chilly(刺骨的)wind, throat choked by dusty air, we felt ever so alone on the crowded streets of New York — “Who can we turn to?” my wife murmured with a fierce frown.Hours creeping by, what I could do was waving my fatigued arms and opening my thirsty throat automatically. 3. (突然有了想法)Staring into my wife's red-rimmed(满眼通红的)eyes, we found ourselves on the verge(边缘) of giving up, until it suddenly dawned on me — Hope always fell at the last minute and patience was the touchstone.4.(开始做) The nearly-extinguished(快要熄灭的)sparks of hope were instantly rekindled(点燃), encouraging us to go on with the search for a van that could deliver the goodwill brimming in us. Paragraph 2: Eventually a van drove up and the driver said yes. 1.(我们的心情)Hearing the simple yes, we all jumped with joy. 2.(更加意外的是)To our big surprise, the driver even offered to join us.3.(开始做)Showering him in a string of thanks, we immediately set out to purchase, and then headed for Harlem. 4. Together we packed them up, carried them onto the van and went to buildings where there were even people living without electricity. That night, we witnessed the other side of the seemingly glamorous(耀眼的)city — families struggling desperately on the edge of poverty, orphans without a roof over their heads... Yet when we gave them food, heart-felt appreciation could be seen on all those pale and weather-beaten faces, radiating enough warmth to melt the coldest winter. 5. (我们的心情)Tears turned into frost, covering our faces, yet we felt our inner world flaming hot.6. It was the worst of times, but it was also the best of times. We cannot change this unfair world that make the rich and poor divide, but at least we can offer our kindness, for the helpless souls — even in a city where “there are no vans.”原文:It was a truly fulfilling experience to make even a small difference. You see, you can make anything happen if you commit to it and take action. Miracles like this happen every day — even in a city where “there are no vans.” (环境描写,可以力求一个渐变的技巧,譬如在小说I survive里有一句:The wind moaned at first. Then it started to howl, and finally it was shrieking so loudly Dad had to turn up the TV.) 从开始的充满希望到绝望:“Who can we turn to?” my wife murmured with a fierce frown... we found ourselves on the verge(边缘)of giving up. 到重新充满期待:The nearly-extinguished(快要熄灭的)sparks of hope were instantly rekindled(点燃). However, they came, they saw and they sped up, only to leave ash and dirt dancing in the air. 和It was the worst of times, but it was also the best of times. Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks. One day, Ali took Zahra's shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn't until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Ali's running shoes. Zahra's school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.Ali heard about a long distance race that was held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes. The day of race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with Ali from behind and he crashed to the ground. Paragraph 1: Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead.__________________________________________________________________________________Paragraph 2: Filled with delight, Ali walked home quickly.__________________________________________________________________________________ 范文:Paragraph 1: Ali looked up and saw the other boys rushing ahead. Refusing to give up at this point, he jumped to his feet and ran as fast as he could. He dashed across the finish line and won the fourth prize. Thinking he would let his sister down, Ali couldn't help sobbing. Just then he suddenly heard the announcement from the broadcast that he won the third prize as the runner who collided with Ali was disqualified for breaking the rule. Holding the shoes close to his chest during the award ceremony, Ali felt overjoyed and relieved.Paragraph 2: Filled with delight, Ali walked home quickly. He could not wait to see his sister and share the thrilling news. On his arrival, Ali found Zahra was waiting outside. She was wondering whether her brother had brought her what she was expecting. “Zahra, see what I have got for you.” He took the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. The instant Zahra saw the shoes, her face lit up. So thrilled was she that she threw herself at Ali. “Thank you! Ali.” Tears of joy filled their eyes.
