出版第一天，该书销量就突破40万册，成为了英国有史以来销量最好的非虚构类书籍，首日销量仅次于《哈利·波特》。

Britain's Prince Harry's autobiography Spare has become the UK's fastest-selling nonfiction book ever, recording figures of 400,000 on its first day on sale.

The controversial memoir Sparehas made headlines in the weeks leading up to its publication, finally hitting the shelves. Figures include sales for hardbacks, ebooks and audiobooks.

为何哈里王子将新书命名为Spare？根据剑桥词典的解释，spare 作为形容词，在英语里有“因为多余所以可以被利用”的意思。

If something is spare, it is available to use because it is extra: a spare key/tyre.

Spare的这层含义，衍生到英国皇室与贵族中，成为了对继承者次序的指代。长子称为the heir，次子则称为the spare。一般情况下只有长子才能成为正统继承人，除非长子发生意外，才由次子继承。也就是说，次子相当于“备胎”或“备选”。

The book’s title comes from an old saying in royal and aristocratic circles: that a first son is an heir to titles, power and fortune, and a second is therefore a spare, should anything happen to the first-born.

哈里在采访中说，哥哥威廉王子是继承人，而他只是个“备胎”（spare）。

Harry's resentment of being the "spare" is the unifying theme of his book, through chapters on his childhood, his schooling, his career as a royal and in the British army, his relationship with his parents and brother and his life with Meghan through courtship, wedding and marriage to their own experience of parenthood.
