桂名扬(1909—1958)粤剧桂派艺术创始人。祖籍浙江宁波,后落籍广东南海。桂名扬11 岁拜优天影戏班男花旦潘汉池为师,学演花旦,后随同崩牙成戏馆到南洋演戏,改演小武。回国后,加入真相剧社,演戏宣传革命。省港大罢工时,他加入重乐乐剧社,为罢工工人义演筹款。稍后入大罗天剧团担任第三小武,虚心向马师曾、曾三多等求教,潜心练艺。大罗天散班后,桂名扬应聘到美国旧金山大王华戏院演出,他在《赵子龙》一剧中饰演赵子龙,深受华侨观众赞赏,获赠的金牌,被誉为“金牌小武”。他回国后组织日月星剧团,与陈锦棠、廖侠怀、李翠芳、钟卓芳、王王王等合作,首本戏有《火烧阿房宫》、《皇姑嫁何人》、《冰山火线》等。抗日战争胜利后,桂名扬在香港与马师曾、红线女、冯镜华、石燕子等合组大三元剧团,后与廖侠怀、白玉堂、罗丽娟、郑碧影、石燕子合组宝丰粤剧团,他均演文武生。1952 年,桂名扬从香港到广州佛山等地演出一个月,加入红星粤剧团,与卫少芳、谭玉真、朱少秋、绿衣郎等合作。后因双耳失聪离开舞台, 1957 年10 月入广东粤剧团担任艺术指导。桂名扬的表演艺术自成一派,称为“桂派”。承传“桂派” 技艺精髓的有梁荫棠、卢海天、任剑辉、黄鹤声、黄超武、黄千岁、麦炳荣、罗家宝等。

Kwai Ming-Yang (桂名扬, Gui Mingyang. 1909-1958) is thefounder of the Kwai School of Cantonese Opera. Kwai was born in Ningbo,Zhejiang Province and settled down in Nanhai of Foshan City, Guangdong Provincelater. At the age of 11, he took Pan Hanchi (潘汉池), a male artist who acted huadan (young belle) inYoutian Theatrical Troupe as his teacher to study performing. Then he toured toSoutheast Asia with Bang-ngaa Sing Theater House where he acted xiaowusheng(young warrior). Returning to his motherland, Kwai joined the Zhenxiang OperaTroupe for performance as a way to publicize revolution. During the Canton-HongKong Strike, he joined the Chongyue Music Opera Troupe in charity performanceto raise funds for the striking workers. Then he became the supporting xiaowushengactor in Daluotian Cantonese Opera Troupe, where he learned from Ma Si Tsangand Zeng Sanduo (曾三多) to polish his performing skills. Soonafter the Daluotian Cantonese Opera Troupe was dissolved, Kwai was hired byDawanghua Theatre House in San Francisco. Deeply loved by the audience for hisperformance in General Zhao Zilong, he was awarded a gold medal and wasacclaimed as "the ace xiaowusheng actor." Upon homecoming, he led theRiyuexing Cantonese Opera Troupe to co-work with famous performers such as ChanKam-Tong, Liu Hap Wai, Li Cuifang, Zhong Zhuofang and Wang Wangwang in hisrepresentative works like Fire in Epang Palace, Suitors for theKing's Sister, and The Flame of Glacier Mountain. After the victoryof the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, Kwai Ming-Yang co-foundedDasanyuan Cantonese Opera Troupe with famous artists like Ma Si Tsang, HungSin-nui, Feng Jinghua and Shi Yanzi in Kong Kong, and Baofengyue CantoneseOpera Troupe with Liu Hap Wai, Bak Yuk Tong (白玉堂, Bai Yutang), Law Lai Kuen (罗丽娟, Luo Lijuan), Pauline Cheng Big Ying (郑碧影, Zheng Biying) and Sek Yin-Tsi (石燕子, Shi Yanzi). In both of the troupes, heacted wenwusheng. In 1952, during a one-month tour performance in cities likeGuangzhou and Foshan, Kwai Ming-Yang joined the Hongxing Cantonese OperaTroupe, where he co-worked with performers like Wei Shaofang, Tam Yuk-Chan (谭玉真, Tan Yuzhen), Zhu Shaoqiu, and LvyiLang. Unfortunately, he was forced to leave the stage due to loss of hearing.Later, in October 1957, he was appointed as art director of the GuangdongCantonese Opera Troupe. His distinctive performance style which impressed thepublic is called Kwai School. The essence of Kwai School has been passed alongby lots of performers, such as Liang Yintang, Lo Hoi Tin (卢海天, Lu Haitian), Yam Kim Fai, Wong HokSing (黄鹤声, Huang Hesheng), Wong Chiu-mo, WongChin Sui (黄千岁, Huang Qiansui), Mak Bing wing, and LawKar Bo (罗家宝, Luo Jiabao).
