单词macho在20世纪初的时候从墨西哥传入美国，最初指“雄性的牲畜”，后来才逐渐引申为“男子气的”。上世纪七八十年代，由于男女平等思潮的影响，这个词转变成了贬义词，指代“大男子主义的男人”，或者“夸大男子气的”、“霸道的”。
