“It’s — it’s true?” faltered Professor McGonagall. “After all he’s done … all the people he’s killed … he couldn’t kill a little boy? It’s just astounding … of all the things to stop him … but how in the name of heaven did Harry survive?”
“We can only guess,” said Dumbledore. “We may never know.”
Professor McGonagall pulled out a lace handkerchief and dabbed at her eyes beneath her spectacles. Dumbledore gave a great sniff as he took a golden watch from his pocket and examined it.
It was a very odd watch. It had twelve hands but no numbers; instead, little planets were moving around the edge. It must have made sense to Dumbledore, though, because he put it back in his pocket and said, “Hagrid’s late. I suppose it was he who told you I’d be here, by the way?”
“Yes,” said Professor McGonagall. “And I don’t suppose you’re going to tell me why you’re here, of all places?”
“I’ve come to bring Harry to his aunt and uncle. They’re the only family he has left now.”
“You don’t mean — you can’t mean the people who live here?” cried Professor McGonagall, jumping to her feet and pointing at number four.
“Dumbledore — you can’t. I’ve been watching them all day. You couldn’t find two people who are less like us. And they’ve got this son — I saw him kicking his mother all the way up the street, screaming for sweets. Harry Potter come and live here!”
“It’s — it’s true?” faltered Professor McGonagall.
邓布利多没有多说，麦格教授就继续颤抖地问他，“真的…这是真的吗？”
Faltered vt. 支吾地说；结巴地讲出，此处表示嗓音有点颤抖、有点结巴的不可置信。
“After all he’s done … all the people he’s killed … he couldn’t kill a little boy?
在他做了所有这些事，杀了所有这些人之后，他竟然没办法杀一个小男孩。
It’s just astounding …
astounding震惊的，让人惊讶的，这简直是太让人震惊了。
of all the things to stop him …
这里不太完整，是说我们做了这么多事情想要制止他，但是在所有这些事情里面，最终让他翻车的竟然是一个小男孩。
but how in the name of heaven did Harry survive?”
In the name of heaven表示看在上帝的份上，看在天堂的份上，这仍是在句子中表示惊讶。
Harry他究竟是怎么活下来的？伏地魔要杀他，他到底是怎么活下来的？
“We can only guess,” said Dumbledore. “We may never know.”
“我们只能猜测真相，我们可能永远不知道。” Dumbledore没有明确回答，也许知晓原因，出于某些缘故目前连麦格也不能说；也许真的连他也不知晓。

听到Dumbledore这么说，麦格教授拿出了一条蕾丝手帕，然后在眼镜（spectacles）下面轻轻擦了擦她的眼睛，其实是在擦泪。
Dumbledore gave a great sniff as he took a golden watch from his pocket and examined it.
Dumbledore的情绪也是一样的，他很用力的抽了一下鼻子，gave a great sniff往往表示哭泣、抽泣时候的吸了一下鼻子。
同时他还从口袋里面拿出了一只金表，并且仔细地看着这只表。
It was a very odd watch.
这是一种很奇怪的表。怎么个奇怪法？
It had twelve hands but no numbers; instead, little planets were moving around the edge.
它有12只指针，但是完全没有数字，取而代之的，是有一些小小的行星在表盘的4周转动。
It must have made sense to Dumbledore, though,
这只表在我们看起来是很古怪，但是这个表对Dumbledore来说肯定是有意义的，Dumbledore看得懂，make sense表示有意义，可以理解的。
because he put it back in his pocket and said, “Hagrid’s late.
为什么说他看得懂？因为他把表放回去，然后接着说，“Hagrid迟到了”，他肯定从表上看到了时间，才说Hagrid’s late。
I suppose it was he who told you I’d be here, by the way?”
“顺便一说，我想是他告诉你，我会在这儿的。”
it was he who……，强调句，类似it is …that …，句中强调he，强调就是他告诉你我会在这的。
“Yes,” said Professor McGonagall. “And I don’t suppose you’re going to tell me why you’re here, of all places?”
“没错，是海格告诉我的”，麦格教授说，“我不认为你会告诉我，有这么多地方，为什么你会偏偏在这里。”
Of all places所有的地方，为什么这么多地方，你竟然偏偏在这？这又是麦格教授一种非常独具个人特点的说话方式，她不问Could you tell me why you're here？你能不能告诉我，你为什么在这？她用了一个反问句，“我不觉得你会告诉我你为什么会在这”。
麦格教授说话很硬的特点，建立得非常鲜明。
“I’ve come to bring Harry to his aunt and uncle. They’re the only family he has left now.”
Dumbledore这次终于没有打太极，给了一个相当明确的答案，他说“我是来来把Harry带给他的姨妈和姨父，现在他们是他在世上唯一仅剩的家人。”
he has left now，没有that的定语从句，修饰前面的the only family唯一的家人，leave过去式left，vt/vi. 离开、留下；这里的left是动词作形容词，表示剩余的、剩下的。
这是Harry仅剩的家人了，所以要把Harry交给他们。
“You don’t mean — you can’t mean the people who live here?” cried Professor McGonagall, jumping to her feet and pointing at number four.
在之前麦格那怕情绪上有起伏，说话还是很稳的，但是现在用了cried惊叫，麦格一听，情绪立马激动起来，惊叫道：“你不会是说——你不可能是说住在这的人吧”。
你不可能是在说他们，你不可能是要把Harry交给这些人吧，而且不光是惊叫，她还有动作，她原来是坐在矮墙上，现在直接跳了起来，用手指着女贞路4号。
“Dumbledore — you can’t. I’ve been watching them all day.
“Dumbledore，你不能这样做。我观察了他们一整天。
You couldn’t find two people who are less like us.
你去满世界找，都不可能找到有两个比他们跟我们更不相似的人。言下之意，他们跟我们真的是两个世界的人。
And they’ve got this son — I saw him kicking his mother all the way up the street, screaming for sweets.
“而且他们还有一个这样的儿子，我看到他走在街上，一路上都在用脚踢他的妈妈，大喊大叫要吃糖。”
果然，德思礼家的娃是个十足的熊孩子。
Harry Potter come and live here!”
“哈利波特来这里，而且住下来！”
句中Harry potter后面的 come跟live没有用动词第三人称单数，变为Harry potter comes and lives here，但这里不是该种情况。
这里麦格是在情绪很激动的情况下，用了一种非常口语化，但是不太完整的表达，这句话完整的样子有可能是：The idea that Harry Potter should come and live here is ridiculous，“哈利波特来这来并且住下，这样的主意简直是太荒唐了。”
哈利波特将来有可能住在德思礼家这件事，是不符合麦格的主观意愿，他不希望哈利住在这，所以用虚拟语气，表达未来可能发生，但跟个人主观意愿相反的事情还没发生，对该事进行了一个假设，因此come and live没有加s作为第三人称单数动词。
小结麦格教授确认了哈利父母死亡，在悲伤之中关心起大难不死的harry，邓校长说要把哈利托付给他世上唯一的亲人——德思礼夫妇。麦格因此被吓了一大跳，她认为这是一个非常荒谬的主意——德思礼这样的家庭根本不值得托付，那么邓校长为什么这么做？
