课文讲解:
1. expensive shops/ hotels高档商店/酒店
E.g. Mary is an expensive girl. She eats like a horse. 玛丽是个拜金的(很费钱的)女孩,她吃得太多.

2. around … 在…附近/周围 = close to …
=in the neighborhood of …
=in the vicinity of …
=off …在…附近
e.g. I rent an apartment off campus.

3. empty adj.空荡荡的,

5. Admire v.欣赏,作动词表示钦佩时不能用进行时。
e.g. I admire her courage.
我欣赏她的勇气。
I am admiring her beauty. 我正在欣赏美貌。
6. had been doing
过去完成进行时
表示持续性的动作一直做到过去的某时,而且还有可能继续下去。
e.g. Bleriot had been making planes since 1905 and this was his latest model.
The small ship, Elkor, which had been searching the Barents Sea for weeks, was on its way home.
The Karen had been sailing in a convoy to Russia when she was torpedoed by an enemy submarine.
7. only just adv. not long ago/ before刚刚,一般用完成时,如果从现在开始算,用现在完成时,如指过去的时间,用过去完成时。
e.g. We've only just arrived.
I've only just moved to London.
People were leaving and I'd only just arrived.
8. The silence was suddenly broken when a large car, with its headlights (being省略)on and its home blaring, roared down the arcade.
独立主格:
(with) n. 非谓语(doing/ done/ to do, 其中being常省略), 在句中常作状语或定语。非谓语动词的逻辑主语通常是主句主语,如逻辑主语不是主句主语,及加上逻辑主语,也就成了独立主格结构。
e.g. The silence was suddenly broken when a large car, with its headlights (being) on and its horn blaring, roared down the arcade.
One man stayed at the wheel While two others with black stockings (being) over their faces jumped out and smashed the window of the shop with iron bars.
…, and at this point, according to my father, I should be looking at farms and cottages in a valley, with the spire of the church of our village showing in the far distance.
It is possible that upon such an occasion a battle ensued, with the sharks being driven away or killed.
Apart from an interesting-looking carved dagger, the box was full of crockery,(with省略) much of it broken.
e.g. He came in and carried a book. 没有突出came和carried,
He came in carrying a book. 非谓语动词,为了突出came in。
He came in and a book was in his hand.
He came in (with) a book (being)in his hand. 独立主格结构
9. come to a stop/ halt= stop/ halt
come to a stop/halt=stop/halt 停下
e.g. Bruce charged at it, but in the middle, the car came to a grinding halt.
Come to an end=end
Come to a close=close
Come to a decision=decide
Come to a conclusion=conclude
10. One man stayed at the wheel while ( “而”,放在句中,构成上下文对比)two others with black stocking over their faces(独立主格,作伴随状语) jumped out and smashed the window of the shop with iron bars.
Be at the wheel, 在驾驶室
While,放在句首,当…时,尽管,虽然
He must be over 60, while/whereas his wife looks about 30.
他可能60多了,而他妻子看起来差不多30.
While she is a likable girl, she can be extremely difficult to work with.
尽管这女孩很可爱,但和她共事非常困难。
11. at the same time与此同时=meanwhile=(in the )meantime
12. He and his staff began throwing furniture out of the window.
begin/start doing,表示主动发生的行为
e.g. Many of tourists on the board had begun bargaining with the tradesmen….
Begin/start to do表示客观现象
e.g.it began to rain.
During the journey, the boat began to sink.
13. Chairs and tables went Flying into the arcade. Flying 作方式状语修饰went.
e.g. the boy went running to meet him.
The girl came bouncing to tell me the news.
14. Be busying doing sth=be busy with sth. 忙于做某事
e.g. They are busy with preparation for the wedding.
Be too busy doing sth to do sth. 忙于做某事而没有做某事
e.g. He was too busy working to notice us come in.
他太忙于工作了而没有注意到我们进来了。
类似搭配
Be up to one’s neck/ears/eyes in…. 忙于做某事
e.g. He is up to his ears in work.
Be wrapped up in…忙于某事=be absorbed in…=be immersed in…
e.g. He is totally immersed in the novel.
他完全沉浸在小说中。
15. …but he was too busy helping himself to diamonds to notice any pain.
Help oneself to sth 未经主人允许自己拿,第一各路别客气,自己拿
e.g. Help yourself to a beer.
本文中是“侵占某物”
e.g. They helped themselves to the farmer’s apples.
16. The raid was over in three minutes…
In 一段时间,就是指用了这段时间, in three minutes就是用了3分钟。
17. speed做不可数名词时,与at, with搭配均可;
e.g. at/with great speed
speed 做可数名词时,只能与at搭配
e.g. at a speed of 60 mph
18. Just as it was leaving(时间状语从句), Mr.Taylor rushed out and ran after it throwing ashtrays and vases(伴随状语), but it was impossible to stop the thieves.
Run after 追赶,追求=chase
Instead of studying, he wastes his time chasing girls.
