LET (让) me MAKE (让) you understand 让 is Chinglish.

One thing that leads to Chinglish is that, sometimes, one Chinese word has multiple English translations and meanings. Take for example the Chinese 让. Most Chinese students have studied that 让 means “make.”

导致中式英语的一个原因是，有时候，一个汉语单词有多种英文翻译和意义。举个例子，中文中的“让”。大多数中国学生都将“让”等同于“make”。

However, in English, “make” means 强迫, like “to force” someone to do something. So sometimes, that’s a good translation. Like in the example: 我会让你爱上我的. Here, we can say, “I will make you love me.”

但是在英语中“make”是强迫的意思，比如“强迫”某人去做某事。有些时候这样翻译是没错的。举个例子：我会让你爱上我的，就可以翻译成 “i will make you love me.”

But “to force” is only one of the meanings of 让. It also has another meaning: 允许, or “to give permission.” Like in the example: 让我好好抱抱你. Here, we can say, “Let me hug you.”

但“强迫”只是“让”的其中一个意思。它还有另一个意思：允许，同意。“举个例子：让我好好抱抱你。在这里，可以把它翻译成，“let me hug you.”

As you can see, the two common English meanings, “let” and “make” are very different – but in Chinese, they are both 让. This leads to many students using Chinglish by using the wrong word (let or make) and utterly confusing the listener.

正如你所见，这两种常见的英文翻译，“let”和“make”是截然不同的意思。但是在中文里它们都翻译成“让”。这就导致了许多学生用了错误的单词（let 或者 make）说出了中式英语，导致别人听得一头雾水。

马洛伊的妈妈让他每天做饭。How would you translate this?

马洛伊的妈妈让他每天做饭。如果是你，你会怎么翻译这个句子？

There’s two ways, depending on the speakers meaning of 让。

这里有两种方式，取决于“让”在句子里的含义

1. Malloy’s mother lets him cook everyday.

2. Malloy’s mother makes me cook everyday.

And both are very different.

两个句子看似相同，但在英语中却有着截然不同的意思。

In #1, using “let” is showing that the mother is giving Malloy permission– which also implies that Malloy wants to cook. If his mom says he can, then she lets him. If she says he can’t, then she won’t let him.

在第一个句子中,用“let”表示这经过了马洛伊的母亲的“允许”——这意味着「做饭」是马洛伊「想做的事」。如果经过了母亲的允许，那么她就会“让”（允许）他做饭。如果母亲不允许，那么她就不会“让”（不允许）他做饭。

In #2, using “make” is showing that the mother is forcingMalloy to cook – which implies that Malloy doesn’t want to cook. He doesn’t like cooking, but he has to do it anyway, because his mom makes him.

在第二个句子中,用“make”表示母亲强迫马洛依去做饭——这意味着「做饭」是马洛伊「不想做的事」。他不喜欢做饭，但他还是得去做，因为他妈妈“让”（强迫）他做了。

史蒂夫让埃塞尔做完了作业。

Steve made Ethel finish the homework. →Ethel didn’t want to finish. Steveforcedher.

这里的“made”是强迫的意思

可以这么理解：今天是周末埃塞尔只想出去玩，不想做作业，但史蒂夫强迫她必须完成。

Steve let Ethel finish the homework. → Ethel wanted to finish. Steveallowedher.

这里的“let”是允许的意思

可以这么理解：暑假才刚刚开始，但埃塞尔为了能愉快地度过这个暑假，坚持要在第一天就把作业给写完，埃塞尔同意了她的想法并允许她在第一天就完成作业。

丹泽尔的爸爸让他看了那个最新的恐怖片。

Denzel’s dad let him watch the new horror movie. →Denzel wanted to watch. His dadallowedit.

这里的“let”是允许的意思

可以这么理解：这是一部豆瓣评分10分的恐怖片，丹泽尔一直想看这部片，并且丹泽尔也很自觉地完成了作业，爸爸为了奖励他，就允许他去看了。

Denzel’s dad made him watch the new horror movie. →Denzel didn’t want to watch. His dadforcedhim.

这里的“made”是强迫的意思

你可以这么理解：丹泽尔并不想看这部片，但是丹泽尔的父亲有非常严重的强迫症，所以强迫着丹泽尔必须陪他看这部恐怖片。
