Historical vs. Historic

即使英语是母语的人也有时会把“Historical”和“Historic”混淆在一起，因为许多人认为他们的意思是一样的。然而这两个单词的用法确实是不同的。说到学术写作，严谨，精准就是一切。所以一定要确保在学术写作中正确地使用“Historical”和“Historic”两个术语！

Historical (Related to History)

“Historical”是指“与历史有关”的通常术语，因此可以在提及历史或过去事件时使用：

Historical records show that Chicago’s population grew quickly between 1850 and 1900.

历史记录表明，芝加哥的人口在1850至1900年间迅速增长。

它也可以用来指那些基于过去的某事，如：

Works of historical fiction are based in the past, but they don’t report true events.

它也可以用于修饰发生在距今更近的时间内的某事某物，甚至当下的某些事，只要值得与过去的相对比的，都可以用“Historic”来修饰

The Chicago Cubs’ historic 2016 World Series victory will be remembered by fans forever.

芝加哥小熊队在2016年世界系列赛历史性的胜利将永远被球迷们所铭记。

要记住的关键是，“Historic”是指历史中某些突出的东西。

Historical or Historic?

虽然这两个单词有时可以互换使用，但为了论文的严谨，在学术写作中正确使用它们是至关重要的。

但是有些时候还是比较难做到，因为有些东西既可以是“historical””，也可以是“historic”，例如，

The Declaration of Independence is a “historical” artifact. But it’s also a “historic” document。

独立宣言是具有“历史”的文件（是历史上的一个文件）。但它也是一份具有“历史性的”文件（即具有重要历史意义的文件）。

这里有一个小tips帮助大家记忆。

“historic”和“specific”都以“IC”结尾，“historic”比“historical”更特别：

Historical = Related to or from the past

Historic = Of historical importance
