1.afraid

说到害怕的，那么afraid就是我们比较常使用的一个词了，这种的害怕的其实就是泛指的一种恐惧的心里，因此所表示的是由于胆小或怯懦而不敢说或做某事。

The little girl is intensely afraid of thunder.

"I have been afraid from day one, but you get used to it, " he said.

2.scared

这个词在使用好上也是比较广泛的，主要指因身心遭受伤害而恐惧,也指不明根源的无形恐惧。

例如：

The child was scared of the fierce looking dog.

If you become scared and back away, then your old conditioning wins.

3.fearful

这是一个普通的用词，使用的范围也比较广泛，既可以指因为外界的变化而引起的恐惧，也可以指自身内心本身的害怕与焦虑。

例如：

He felt like doing something fearful.

Are you obsessed by fearful thoughts and worries, or do you have control over your thoughts?

4.frightful.

看起来是不是和fearful有点像，但是他们在意思上的表达会有较大的差别，虽然大多都是表示可怕的，但是frightful指的是巨大的或令人意外的事件给人带来的害怕或惊骇，侧重的是使人陷入短暂的惊恐或产生毛骨悚然的感觉。

5.awful

这个词也是表示可怕的意思，但是又区别于前面几个词，awful指由于过分的崇敬或畏惧而引起的害怕,但不厌恶,有较庄严的含义，所以也可以指威严的令人害怕或敬畏，且这个害怕会带有一定的感情色彩。

6.dreadful

7.terrific

多指外表、形状或力量等的可怕。

8.terrible

9.horrible

horrible刚刚也是说到过的，所以其指因骇人听闻的丑恶而令人毛骨悚然，但其着重厌恶的成分多于害怕。horrible具有强烈的感情色彩,可表示一种憎恶的态度。

His heart sickened at the thought of that horrible scene.

10.appalling

这个词的害怕的害怕情绪有多重，指的是既令人害怕并且还使人惊异、胆寒。
