From the first day he entered my classroom, Willard P. Frank existed in his own world, shutting out his classmates and me. My attempts at building a friendly relationship with him were met with complete indifference. I could see that his classmates fared no better. Willard was strictly a loner who seemed to have no desire or need to break his silence

Shortly after the Thanksgiving holiday, we received word of the annual Christmas collection of money for the less fortunate people in our school district.

“Christmas is a season of giving,”I told my students. “There are a few students in the school who might not have a happy holiday season. By contributing to our Christmas collection, you will help buy food, clothing and toys for these needy people. We will start the collection tomorrow.”

When I called for the contributions the next day, I discovered that almost everyone had forgotten except for Willard P. Frank. The boy dug deep into his pants pockets as he walked slowly to my desk. Carefully, he dropped two quarters into the small container.

“I don’t need milk for lunch,” he mumbled. For a moment, just a moment, he smiled. Then he turned and walked back to his desk.

That night, after school, I took our few contributions to the school principal. I couldn’t help sharing the incident that had taken place.

“I may be wrong, but I believe Willard might be getting ready to become a part of the world around him,” I told the principal.

“Yes.” he nodded.“And we might do well to have him share a bit of his world with us. I just received a list of the poor families in our school who most need help through the Christmas collection. Here, take a look at it.”

As I gazed down to read, I discovered Willard P. Frank and his family were the top names on the list. Seeing this, I decided to do something for him

Paragraph 1

On that Sunday, I paid a visit to Willards family. On entering his house, I was surprised to find a barely empty room with only a broken bed and a dirty second hand sofa. Willard told me that his mother died a few years ago and that his father was missed, leaving him to live with a sick grandma. When asked why he had given the two quarters,__Willard mumbled,__“There are people poorer than me, so I just want to do some help by contributing my milk money.” Hearing his words, I couldn’t help bursting into tears. I thought I should help him break his silence.

Paragraph 2

The next day, I had a special class for Willard. I shared his story with the whole class and said “Now, on behalf of the people in need, I should say thank you Willard, you are great!”. After a silence, all the students clapped, saying “Willard, you are great! Willard, you are great!” and They walked slowly to him and hugged him tightly. A friend relationship was built and Willard’s silence was broken by a smile on his face.

It was 8 a.m. Kathy, a 25yearold nurse, had just finished a 12hour night shifts at a hospital. She was tired, but glad to be sailing along highway to where she lived. Although the local government had posted a snow alert(预警), the calm grey sky convinced Kathy the drive would be safe. “I figured I’d be in bed in an hour,” she says.

Snow began when she was halfway home. Listening to the radio, Kathy learned the highway was closed because a tractor had slid off the road. She texted some friends and her mom, and tried not to sleep as she waited

After a couple of hours, however, conditions worsened. Strong winds began rocking Kathy’s car. She couldn’t see anything outside, and snow was drifting up her doors. It was, she says, “a total whiteout and rows of cars and trucks.”

Late in the afternoon a police officer came and asked if she was in any difficulty. She said she was fine. She asked the police officer if there was any way to get past the trucks. “No, ma’am,” he answered. “You’re not going anywhere.”

Once as it got dark, Kathy began to worry. She texted his brother Cris, telling him to drive snowmobiling buddy(雪地汽车) to get to the highway and find her.

As Cris rode slowly alongside the rows of cars and trucks, people would roll down their windows and ask for help. “I was the first person they’d seen in six hours.”He explained he was picking up his sister. He told them, “Nobody’s coming and I can’t take you.”

Near 10 p.m. Cris reached Kathy. He directed Kathy to pull her car onto the shoulder and asked her to get into his snowmobiling buddy.

As they headed for home, the fun started. About five kilometres into the journey, Cris made a mistake. What he thought was a shallow ditch(浅沟) turned out to be a deep trough(水槽). Instead of coming out the other side, they just kept going down. They were trapped. And feathery snow was over their heads.

To be honest, sometimes, I hate it when I start thinking about money because it brings me down and drives me sad. When I was younger, I always wondered why money was so important. There wasn’t anything I needed. It’s good to be a kid, since he or she doesn’t have to worry about responsibilities. But as everyone get older, of course that changes. I work almost every day, but it’s still not enough. That’s what is discouraging—it’s never enough.

Right now I have to sacrifice(牺牲) the money I make. I put my school on hold so that I can pay for my girlfriend’s school fee and everything else. I’m very supportive in everything I do, and she is also very supportive. We warm each other up. Hoping she really gets everything right, because we only have each other. I find that hope is my inspiration and that everything will work out however hard it gets. Even though I find that life is hard, it never stops me from helping others, especially those who are less fortunate. While I might be going through hard times myself, there are those out there who could be going through even harder times.

Last night, on my way home I stopped by to buy some burgers in a fast food restaurant. A homeless man approached me and asked,“Do you have any bottles lying around?” I knew he would recycle them for a few cents, but I didn’t have any. I said,“Sorry, I don’t.” And again he asked,“Can you spare some change?” I smiled and said,“Sorry, I can’t.”He was very polite. He smiled back and said,“OK, thank you.” Even though he didn’t have anything, he was still in good spirits. Just from the way he spoke, I could tell he was fine.

Paragraph 1:

I went in and ate my meal, but in my head I wondered if the homeless man was hungry. After I finished my meal I decided to order another one for him. I didn’t know if he was still around, but I thought my helping would warm him up. They handed me the hot chocolate first and as I waited for my burger, I noticed the homeless man standing beside me. I asked, “Are you hungry? This hot chocolate is for you and there’s a burger coming up for you too.” He replied politely,__ “Thank__you. That’s very kind of you.”

Paragraph 2:

No matter how hard life is, there are always ways to handle it. And it’s not always through money. It’s through love. If you love someone, you will help him and give him what he needs. The love you give today might be forgotten tomorrow. But it doesn’t matter. Love everybody because that’s the greatest thing you can give and it is the start of your life trip.

It was a warm and sunny morning at the Central Park Zoo. Abigail and her classmates were abuzz with excitement as their school bus entered the zoo park lot. Today, Abigail’s class was going on a field trip to the zoo to learn more about the animals and their natural habitats.

“Before you leave the bus, please make sure you have your buddy!” Mrs. Brown announced. To make sure no one got lost in the zoo, each student had a buddy (companion/friend). Abigail’s buddy was named Derrick. Derrick loves animals and was also excited to go to the zoo. But sometimes, Derrick does not follow the rules and gets in trouble. Abigail hoped that today, Derrick would follow the rules so they would not get in trouble.

While the rest of the students got off the bus, Abigail and Derrick quickly ran off to explore. They found the exhibits for many different kinds of animals and learned a lot about their natural habitats. They saw the elephants playing and they saw giraffes eating. They saw the polar bears sleeping and the monkeys leaping. Abigail asked Derrick:

“Derrick, what is your favorite animal?”

“I think I like chimpanzees best. They have a lot of energy, just like me! What animal do you like, Abigail?”

“I love polar bears! I think their lifestyle in the Arctic is very interesting.”

A few hours later, Abigail and Derrick started to feel hungry. They made their way back to the zoo entrance to eat lunch at the Rainforest Cafe. The Rainforest Cafe is both Abigail and Derrick’s favorite restaurant because there is an aquarium inside. The restaurant is also famous for its chocolate cake, which Abigail ordered for dessert after they had finished their lunch.

As Abigail was finishing her cake, Derrick excused himself to go to the restroom. About ten minutes later, a sudden alarm began to go off and a voice came over the loudspeaker.

“Attention! Someone has opened the chimpanzee exhibit! Some chimpanzees have escaped!”

People were screaming and starting to run. Abigail looked for Derrick, but he was nowhere to be found.

As more and more people ran out of the zoo, Abigail began to think where her buddy,_Derrick could be. She got up from the table quickly and circled back to the restrooms, calling Derrick’s name. There was no answer, so Abigail left the restaurant. As she looked around the zoo grounds, she remembered that Derrick had a lot of energy and had told her that chimpanzees were his favorite animals. Derrick wouldn’t have left the restaurant to release the chimpanzees, would he? Oh no! Abigail was sure she knew where Derrick had gone.

Paragraph 2

As Abigail raced up the path to the animal exhibits, she was stopped in her tracks by none other than Derrick himself, with two chimpanzees cradled in his arms. He offered a small, guilty smile. “I didn’t mean to let them escape,” he began. “I just wanted to take them out to play for a little while! I took the key from a zookeeper who wasn’t looking. But then, the lock broke and...” Behind Abigail, Mrs. Brown had begun to walk up the path and saw Derrick holding the animals with excitement. It was clear from her stern expression that he was in big trouble because he didn’t follow the rules

A Mother’s Love

My mom only had one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. She cooked for students and teachers to support the family.

There was one day during elementary school when my mom came over to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed.

How could she do this to me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school one of my classmates said, “Your mom only has one eye!”

I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted her that day and said,“If you’re only going to make me a laughing stock, why don’t you just die?”

My mom did not respond. I didn’t even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I took no notice of her feelings at all.

I wanted to be out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied really hard, and got a chance to go abroad for further education.

Then, I got married. I bought a house of my own. I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts. Then one day, my mother came to visit me. She hadn’t seen me in years and she didn’t even meet her grandchildren.

When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I shouted at her for coming over uninvited. I screamed at her, “How dare you come to my house and scare my children! GET OUT OF HERE! NOW!!!”

And to this, my mother quietly answered,“Oh, I’m so sorry. I may have gotten the wrong address.” and she was soon out of sight.

One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house. So I lied to my wife that I was going on a business trip. After the reunion, I went to the old house just out of curiosity.

My neighbors said that she died. I did not shed a single tear. They handed me a letter that she had wanted me to have.

Though born into a rich family, by twenty, Hilary had spent all the money. He then had some trouble with the bank and was put in prison. He escaped and ran to Australia, where he could either die or work, which gave him no pleasure. Then he remembered that he had an aunt

She was his father’s only sister, but his father used to say she brought no glory to the family. It seemed that his aunt had failed to marry a nobleman. Instead, she had chosen a businessman as her husband. So her brother considered her dead. Later on, her husband died and left her a lot of money; but that did not bring her back to life in her brother’s opinion.

Hilary discovered his aunt’s address. Fortunately she remained faithful and honest to him. So Hilary soon moved into her house and lived comfortably.

Soon his aunt was deadly ill. Hilary was very worried. Fate had found a home for him, and was now going to throw him out of it. There was only one thing that could save him: her will

“Will?”she said,“Yes, I have made one. That was when I was a girl and had not much money. I left all my money to some religious people.”

“Didn’t you make another will when you were married.” Hilary asked.

“No,”she said in a low voice, “There was no need. When I finally had a lot of money I found I had no relations.”

On the next day he went to the public library and examined a book of law. It told him what he already believed. When a woman is married, an earlier will loses its value. A new will must be made. If no new will is made, the money goes to the nearest relation. Hilary knew that he was his aunt’s only relation. His future was safe.

After a few months, Hilary’s problems became serious. He badly needed money. He had expensive tastes, and owed a lot of money to shopkeepers. They trusted him because his aunt was rich; but the debt was terrible.

Paragraph 1

Unfortunately his aunt did not want to discuss money matters at all. Hilary began to wonder about a new problem. Should it be better for his aunt to die now so that he could get the money to pay off his debts? Just then, his aunt told him that she was going to send for her lawyer. Worried that his aunt might leave all her money to someone else in her new will, he made a quick decision to put her life to an end.

Paragraph 2

One night, his aunt asked him to prepare the medicine for her. Realizing it was a good chance to carry out his plan, Hilary doubled the amount of the medicine, which would surely put his aunt to sleep forever. Actually his aunt was so well aware of his intention that she explained that if she could live until tomorrow, she would make a new will in his favor and that if she died that night, he would get nothing. Hearing this, Hilary attempted to stop her drinking the medicine, but it was too late.
