屈 原

余幼好此奇服兮，

年既老而不衰。

带长铗之陆离兮，

冠切云之崔嵬。

被明月兮佩宝璐。

世混浊而莫余知兮，

吾方高驰而不顾。

驾青虬兮骖白螭，

吾与重华游兮瑶之圃。

登昆仑兮食玉英，

与天地兮同寿，

与日月兮同光。

哀南夷之莫吾知兮，

旦余济乎江湘。

乘鄂渚而反顾兮，

欸秋冬之绪风。

步余马兮山皋，

邸余车兮方林。

乘舲船余上沅兮，

齐吴榜以击汰。

船容与而不进兮，

淹回水而疑滞。

朝发枉陼兮，

夕宿辰阳。

苟余心其端直兮，

虽僻远之何伤。

入溆浦余儃徊兮，

迷不知吾所如。

深林杳以冥冥兮，

乃猿狖之所居。

山峻高以蔽日兮，

下幽晦以多雨。

霰雪纷其无垠兮，

云霏霏而承宇。

哀吾生之无乐兮，

幽独处乎山中。

吾不能变心而从俗兮，

固将愁苦而终穷。

接舆髡首兮，

桑扈臝行。

忠不必用兮，

贤不必以。

伍子逢殃兮，

比干菹醢。

与前世而皆然兮，

吾又何怨乎今之人！

余将董道而不豫兮，

固将重昏而终身！

乱曰：

鸾鸟凤皇，

日以远兮。

燕雀乌鹊，

巢堂坛兮。

露申辛夷，

死林薄兮。

腥臊并御，

芳不得薄兮。

阴阳易位，

时不当兮。

怀信侘傺，

忽乎吾将行兮！

屈原

（约公元前340～约公元前278），战国末期楚国贵族县。曾辅佐楚怀王，担任左徒、三闾大夫等官职。顷襄王时，长期被流放到湖南沅江、湘江一带。当他听到楚国郢都被敌人攻破的消息后，投汨罗江而死。所作《离骚》《天问》《九章》《九歌》等。

QU Yuan (C. 340 BC-278 BC), from Noble County of Chu in the Late Warring States period. He once assisted King Huai of Chu, serving as a royal councilor, minister of etiquettes and so on. In the reign of King Qingxiang of Chu he was exiled to the River Ruan and the River Xiang areas in today’s Hunan Province for a long time. Hearing about the conquest of Ying, the capital, Qu Yuan committed suicide by jumping into the River Miluo. He is remembered for Woebegone, Asking Heaven, Nine Cantos, Nine Odesand so on.

Crossing the River

I’ve loved strange clothes since I was a child;

Now I’m old, I remain so styled.

I wear a long sword on my waist,

And don a crown so highly raised,

And carry a jade disc brightly chaste.

The world dark, none knows how I aspire;

I just go ahead, my head raised higher.

A dragon blue aided by dragons white

Is what I’ll ride with Chunghua to tour a godly sight.

Mt. Queen I’ll climb and on nectar I’ll dine

So I’ll live long like Heaven and earth

And with the sun and the moon I’ll shine.

How sad, no southerners do me understand!

Tomorrow, I’ll row to an alien land.

I come ashore at the E and look back;

The chill wintry wind blows, alack.

Up a hill my horse I lead and drive;

In my cart at a square wood I arrive.

Sitting in a boat, upstream I go;

The boatmen try their best to row.

So slow, the boat can’t go ahead;

In whirlpools it pauses instead.

In the morn Wangzhu I leave

And sleep at Chenyang at eve.

So long as I’m upright and square,

However far off I don’t care.

In Xupu I hesitate, oh no;

So lost, I don’t know where to go.

Dark and deep the wood and the dell,

It’s where monkeys and langurs dwell.

The mountains rise to shade the sun;

It’s dark below, it’s raining on.

It’s all snow, flying without bound;

The roof is with clouds crowned.

I deplore my life without glee;

My solitude the hills see.

I can’t yield to the world, I shan’t change my will,

So I’m unrequited, poor and ill.

Jieyu had his hair cut off;

Sanghu, naked, did all doff.

A loyal one is not used,

A sage one is refused!

O Wu Tzuxu was erased,

Bigan was cut into paste.

It’s the same now as before;

Why should I today’s world deplore?

Without hesitation, I’ll keep my way,

Though in darkness for life I’ll stay.

The lay is like this:

Phoenixes, swans,

O away you all fly;

Sparrows, magpies,

O you nest in halls high.

Daphne, Magnolia,

O in wilds they die;

Urine and dung so mixed ,

O balm can’t get by.

Upside down day and night,

O it’s wrong time, not right.

Loyal but unused, I grieve

O for a better place I now leave.
