Dutch national carrier KLM Royal Dutch Airlines announced it would develop a V-shaped, fuel-efficient airplane known as the Flying-V. A mock-up of the new cabin design will be open to the public as part of KLM's 100th anniversary celebrations.

This futuristic Flying V airplane concept puts the passengers inside the wings instead of a central fuselage.

The plane’s cargo holds and fuel tanks would also be incorporated in the flying V’s wings, something that can make long distance air travel more sustainable.

The Dutch Airline KLM announced that it would team up with Delft University of Technology to develop the lightweight, fuel-efficient aircraft.

Foregoing the fuselage as well as the tail of the conventional airliner would cut the plane’s weight and reduce aerodynamic drag, resulting in significant fuel savings.

KLM said the plane should consume 20% less fuel than an Airbus A350, a twin-engine airliner that is now in wide use around the world.

The plane will be shorter and lighter than an A 350 but could carry just as much cargo and could accommodate 314 passengers, just like the airbus plane.

The completed plane is expected to enter service between 2040 and 2050.
