Much like making the perfect scent, describing a scent perfectly is a sciencein itself1.
Similar to music, perfume has “notes,” which have to do with what part of the fragrance strikes you at what time.
First up are the top notes. These should be obvious within the first 15 minutes of putting on the fragrance.
Scent designers might put strange, spicy, or even offensive2 smells into this part. Why?
Because they stand out3, get your attention, and then disappear.
After a certain amount of time, the top notes gradually fade, and this opens the door for the heart notes.
These tend to make an appearance4 minutes after the perfume is put on, and they can last up to two or three hours.
The heart notes are what you probably remember most, and are the “true” scent of the perfume.
For instance5, if the perfume is supposed to smell like flowers, the flowery notes come out here.
Finally, there are the base notes. These emerge6 anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour after application7, and they can last four to six hours or even longer!
The base notes boost8 the top and heart notes, helping them last longer.
Chemicals that are often used in base notes are deep, warm, and strong scents which give the perfume that final push.
It may seem like a lot to remember, but don’t forget—smelling good is serious business!
