In response to tightened regulation over shoppers who buy luxury products overseas on behalf of Chinese mainland customers, the buyers - "
daigou" in Chinese pinyin - are coming up with increasingly creative ways of promoting their business, like posting crude sketches on WeChat as advertising or using memes to disguise their activities and evade tax.
"This lipstick is very beautiful. I have two. Baby, do you need one? Only 155rmb ($ 23)," posted a
daigoualong with a crude colored drawing the lipstick.
Some
daigousummarized their linguistic skills in posts along with a simple drawing of a product in a not-too-subtle disguise for a product advertisement.
"If I use actual photos of my products in my WeChat advertising, their logos will be recognized by algorithms designed by relevant government agencies. If I draw my products, I can avoid supervision," Liu, who has been working as a
daigoufor four years and often goes to countries like Japan to make purchases, told the Global Times.
Liu said she has decided to give up
daigoubusiness due to the tightened regulations. However, she said her other
daigoufriends with larger business volumes have begun to use crude drawings in their daily WeChat advertisement.

China's first e-commerce law, which became effective on Tuesday, requires vendors on e-commerce platforms, WeChat, live-streaming websites and other online platforms to register as a business, obtain a license, pay required taxes and be held responsible for selling fake goods. Rule-breakers can face fines up to 2 million yuan ($290,900).
