rather与quite的区别

两个词都是副词，都表示某种程度，意思非常接近，经常可以互换，但有的时候不能互换。Rather表示程度（如rather good）更加正规，而quite后面接可分级(有比较级)的形容词，如fast, smart等（如quite small）。

Quite的含义是有一点，但不是很多，rather强调quite, 意思是比预期的多，不寻常，令人惊奇。例如：

I am quite happy about the job I got but it is not the job I want. （表示a little）

The fridge in this office is rather good. (表示超预期)

He was quite big.表示他不算小，但没有绝对很大的含义。

He was rather big. 表示他块头很大，可以从不小到巨大。

Rather多用于一些负面的东西,而quite一般接正面的多。

They walked rather slowly. (接负面slowly)

He walked quite fast. （接正面的fast）

I’m afraid I behaved rather badly.（接负面badly）

Quite可与动词搭配，谈论观点和喜好，rather也可以这样。

I quite（rather） like tennis but I can never play proper games because I can’t serve. (指有一点喜欢网球)

I quite（rather） enjoy sitting here and watching people go by. (指相当喜欢)

面两个句子如果用括号里的rather, 则喜欢的程度要更强。

而有些动词用quite做状语，表示程度.

I quite agree. You’re absolutely right. (指完全同意)

I cannot quite understand that the news would have upset her. (指不完全明白)
