Hello everyone and welcome back to Love English.

I'm Sabrah, your British University English teacher.

Now I've got a bit of a fun lesson for you today.

And this is because as many of you know I am expecting a baby.

My baby is due very soon, in fact, in a couple of weeks so scary times.

But I wanted to share with you ten expressions that all have "baby" in them.

The first is: to take baby steps, to take baby steps.

第一个是:to take baby steps(小步前进;谨慎)。

And this is when you take little steps, because you want to be careful in a particular situation.

And it could be that the situation needs a certain level of care or caution.

For example, many countries are starting to open up again after the coronavirus, after the lockdown.

But they're taking baby steps.

They're not doing it all at once.

They're going very slowly, taking little steps.

So we'll often say "okay, don't do it all at once, baby steps." An example would be: "after the economic crash, the country is taking its first baby steps towards a more financially stable future." number two is: to be left holding the baby, to be left holding the baby.

第二:to be left holding the baby(不得不独自撑起一个困难的局面)。

And this means left with the responsibility.

So basically if you're left holding the baby, this is where other people have decided they don't want to be responsible for this particular thing anymore or don't want to have as much to do with it and so they've left you, shouldering the most responsibility.

So if I left Love English, I'm not going to guys, don't worry but if I did leave Love English Leila would be left holding the baby.

Another example might be when the Prime Minister resigned, the Chancellor was left holding the baby.

Number three is: don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

第三点是:don't throw the baby out with the bathwater(在扔掉你不要的东西时把宝贵的东西都无意地一起扔掉了)。

This is a great expression and basically this means don't get rid of something good because you want to get rid of something bad.

So in many situations, there're positives and negatives and so maybe to get rid of the negative we would also have to get rid of the positive.

So for example a person might say when she quit her job because her ex was working there she really threw the baby out with the bathwater.

Or we can say don't throw the baby out with the bathwater, just because you're not talking to your sister, it doesn't mean you have to ignore your whole family.

So it's basically like saying "don't take such drastic action as you're going to get rid of the good as well as the bad." You can't separate them.

Next one is: to have a baby face, to have a baby face.

下一个是:to have a baby face(有娃娃脸)。

And this means a young and youthful face.

So often people who maybe have chubby cheeks might have a babyface.

So we might say, "I can't believe he's 40. He's still got a babyface." We might say he doesn't look old enough to go into a nightclub.

He's still got a babyface.

So a young, youthful face I would say that Britney Spears used to have quite a babyface and Brad Pitt when he was younger he had a real babyface.

But it's a particularly youthful look about the face and often this can be quite an attractive feature.

The next one is: to be a crybaby, to be a crybaby.

接下来是:to be a crybaby(爱哭鬼)。

So a person who cries easily, who isn't mature, often we talk about children in this way, then it could be a teenager or even an adult if they were behaving like this.

So we might say, "oh, come on don't be such a crybaby. You can't always have your own way." Or, "don't be such a crybaby. You only got a scratch." So things like this, it's somebody who cries easily and it's a little immature or unnecessary.

To be a crybaby.

Number six is: a baby boomer.

第六是:a baby boomer(生育高峰的小孩)。

Have you heard that this before, guys?

We also refer to the baby boom generation.

And this was a period in history after the Second World War.

This was of course because the soldiers had come back from the war and obviously they wanted to have a good time again and be reunited with their loves.

And so we saw a huge boom in the number of babies born.

For example, my mother, she's a baby boom generation so it's the generation born after the Second World War.

I don't know if you refer to that in your countries, guys.

But we will call these people boomers or baby boomers.

Number seven is very similar, a baby boom, just means a huge increase in the amount of babies born.

As you know "boom": means an increase usually a sudden one, or it can mean a sound.

But here we're talking about an increase.

So we might say, "gosh, there's three ladies pregnant in the office. It's a real baby boom." Number eight is: baby talk, baby talk.

第八条是:baby talk(模仿儿语)。

And this is what couples do to each other or sometimes even friends.

And it's where you talk in a more childlike voice to be cute or appealing or sweet towards your partner or even towards your friend.

So I have to admit that as cheesy as it is my boyfriend and I do sometimes baby talk to each other.

We try to not be too cheesy, but it is I suppose a natural thing that couples will often do.

So you might say "Oh, baby please, will you go into the shop and get me some ice cream, please." Do you have a baby talk with your partner?

Go on, admit it below in the comments.

Number nine is: your baby daddy or your baby mama.

This really comes from American English.

And we're probably only just adopting it now in the UK.

Your baby daddy is of course your baby's father.

We might say "oh, he's my baby daddy" or for example, "oh, my baby mama." Like it's quite nice I supposed to hear your partner say, "looking out for my baby mama", this kind of thing.

But it is very American English.

You'll hear it in a lot of American films things like that.

But as I said, we are adopting it now in the UK.

Number 10 the last one.

This is: to say something is your baby, to say something is your baby.

这就是:to say something is your baby(视若珍宝)。

And this is where something is particularly precious to you.

So it could be a project, it could be your house it could be your work, but it's something which is so precious to you, it's almost like your child.

So I have to say that in many ways Love English has been Leila and I's baby.

It's been precious to us.

We've cared about it, a lot, we've put a lot of work in.

So it's been our baby, been very precious.

Of course, when I have my real baby, I might not be able to say that anymore.

Do tell me below guys, what's your baby is there's something in your life that is your baby right now.

Right everyone, that is the end of today's lesson.

A simple lesson but hopefully a fun one.

And you can quickly start using some of that useful vocabulary.

We'll see you soon guys on Love English.

Bye-bye.
