The Red Shoes

红鞋子

There once lived in a town a cute (可爱的) and pretty little girl whose name was Karen.

曾经镇子里住着一个名字叫凯伦的可爱又漂亮的小女孩。

Because she was so poor,

因为她很穷，

she had to wear a torn dress, even walked around with bare feet in summer,

她只能穿着一件破裙子，甚至夏天的时候只能光着脚走，

and wore heavy and crude wooden (木制的) shoes in winter.

到了冬天的时候只能穿着一双又厚重又粗糙的木鞋。

Her feet were always full of scars and wounds.

她的脚总是布满了疤痕和伤口。

“Karen, why do your feet hurt you so much? I will make a pair of shoes for you.”

“凯伦，看看你的脚都伤成什么样了？我给你做一双鞋子吧。”

An old lady who ran a shoe store made a pair of red shoes for Karen.

一位经营着制鞋店的老妇人为凯伦做了一双红色的鞋子。

Those shoes were made of old pieces of cloth, and she sewed them by hand.

那些鞋是用老旧的碎布料制成的，而且是老妇人亲手缝制的。

“Thank you, aunt.”

“谢谢你，阿姨。”

Karen was so happy for her new shoes which suited her, that she jumped up and down.

凯伦有了自己的新鞋子非常高兴，上蹿下跳的。

But, unluckily, Karen's mother passed away on that day.

但是，不幸的是，凯伦的母亲在那天去世了。

After the funeral, a noblewoman saw Karen following her.

葬礼过后，一个贵妇人看到凯伦一直跟着她。

The lady got down from her carriage and talked to the minister.

贵妇人从马车上下来后跟牧师交谈了一番。

“I want to take her with me and look after her.”

“我想让她跟着我并照顾她。”

“She is alone (孤独的). If you take care of her, that will be a great blessing for the girl.”

“她孤苦无依的。如果你能照顾她，那真是她极大的福气。”

Karen thought, “These shoes brought me this luck.'”

凯伦觉得，“是这双鞋给我带来的好运。”

However, the noblewoman burned her dirty red shoes, put fresh new clothes on her,

然而，贵妇人却烧了她那破旧的红鞋子，给她穿上了新衣服，

let her read books and taught her how to do needlework.

让她读书，教她如何做针线活。

She now became a polite girl.

她现在成了一个有家教的女孩。

But one day, the Queen and the Princess were passing through the town.

但是有一天，王后和公主经过了这个城市。

Everyone in the town swarmed around the carriage. “How beautiful they are!”

镇上的人们都围着马车感叹：“她们好漂亮啊！”

“It seems as if fairies (仙女) came down from the sky.”

“好像是从天上下来的仙女一样。”

All the people praised (称赞) the Queen and the Princess.

所有的人都在称赞王后和公主。
