Myanmar military detained elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi
Last Monday, Myanmar’s military detained the democratically elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The army said the detention was necessary because the government had not acted on① the military’s claims of fraud② in November’s elections, in which Suu Kyi’s ruling party③ won a majority of the parliamentary seats up for grabs④. The army handed power to military chief Min Aung Hlaing and imposed a state of emergency for one year. Nobel Peace Prize winner Suu Kyi, 75, came to power after a 2015 election win that followed decades of house arrest⑤ in a struggle for democracy with Myanmar’s junta⑥ that turned her into an international icon⑦. While she has remained popular at home, Suu Kyi’s deference⑧ to the generals—going so far as to defend their crackdown on Rohingyas—has left her reputation internationally in tatters⑨.

Captain① Tom Moore, who captured Britain’s heart② as he raised more than £30 million for the NHS③ last year, has died at the age of 100 last Tuesday. The centenarian④ was admitted to Bedford hospital on January 31, a week after he tested positive for COVID-19, following treatment for pneumonia⑤. Captain Tom, a WWII veteran⑥, became the nation’s sweetheart⑦ after he set an initial goal of raising £1,000 by his 100th birthday in April 2020 by walking around his garden, with a walking frame⑧. He went on to raise around £33 million for the NHS, breaking two Guinness world records. He was also knighted by Queen Elizabeth and became the oldest artist to claim a UK No. 1 single⑨ for his cover⑩of You’ll Never Walk Alone with Michael Ball and the NHS Voices of Care choir.
