This refusal to allow anyone to be a manager goes back to the early days of the Ford Motor Company.

Even then it had been the old man's practice, for instance, to demote first-line supervisors regularly every few years or so lest they “become uppity" and forget that they owed their job to Mr. Ford’s will.

Technicians Henry Ford wanted; and he was willing to pay them generously.

Just as, early in his career, he decided not to share ownership with anybody, he apparently decided not to share management.
