第51课 Reward for virtue

1、My friend, Hugh, has always been fat, but things got so bad recently that he decided to

go on a diet.

so......that...... 如此......以至于......

things 复数形式，意思是情形

How are things going? 近来情况怎么样？

go on a diet 节食，也可以用 be on a diet 表示

2、He wrote out a long list of all the foods which were forbidden.

write out 写出

food 是不可数名词，复数 foods 表示各种各样的食物。

类似的词还有 fruit 和 fish，复数形式表示各种各样的水果和鱼。

3、The list included most of the things Hugh loves.

include 这里是动词，注意跟including 的区别，including一般用作介词。

例句：The price includes the tax.

The band played many songs, including some of my favourites.

4、Yesterday I paid him a visit.

pay sb. a visit 或 pay a vist to sb. 拜访

这也是一个动词 pay 带双宾语 him 和 a visit 的情况

5、I rang the bell and was not surprise to see that Hugh was still as fat as ever.

as......as ever 和以往一样

6、It was obvious that he was very embarrassed.

it 是形式主语，代表的是后面 that 引导的从句

embarrassed 是由动词过去分词转换成形容词的用法，用来修饰人

如果是用来修饰事物，用动词的现在分词形式

例句：His question was very embarrassing.

7、This list included most of the things Hugh loves: butter, potatoes, rice, beer,

milk, chocolate, and sweets.

注意句子中的不可数名词：butter, rice, beer, milk, chocolate, 表示不可数名词的数量时，要在前面加一些词，比如：five bars of chocolate, a bowl of rice, a glass of milk,

a pint of beer.
