Three thousand years ago, the Duke of Zhou travelled throughout China and finally stopped at the foot of Songshan Mountain. In order to measure the shadows cast by the sun and the center of the earth, he built an earth sundial here, which is the earliest well-preserved observatory in China.

Over the past 3,000 years, Huaxia culture started and has been passed down here; Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism originated and mixed here; civilizations are inherited and innovated here; a number of buildings marking the zenith of architecture of that time are scattered and well-spaced here.
On Aug. 1, 2010, the UNESCO's World Heritage Committee decided at its 34th meeting to add the Historic Monuments of Dengfeng in "The Centre of Heaven and Earth" to the World Cultural Heritage List. According to the World Heritage Committee, the Historic Monuments of Dengfeng in "The Centre of Heaven and Earth" are an oriental ancient architectural art epicentre, showing to the world the magnificence of China's ancient architecture and the splendor of China's long history. If we say that Songshan Mountain is a heavenly book written with stones and ideas, the Songshan architectural complex will be a classic symphony composed of soul and temperament.

The Historic Monuments of Dengfeng in "The Centre of Heaven and Earth", a collection of buildings concentrated at the southern foot of Songshan Mountain, were built in some historically important periods and have been well preserved to date. They are of significant historical, cultural, artistic and scientific value and in good harmony with the natural sceneries of Songshan Mountain. The Historic Monuments of Dengfeng in "The Centre of Heaven and Earth" consist of 11 buildings at 8 sites: Taishi Tower and Zhongyue Temple, Shaoshi Tower, Qimu Tower, Songyue Temple Pagoda, Shaolin Temple Architectural Complex (Changzhu Yard, Chuzu Convent, and Pagoda Forest), Huishan Temple, Songyang Academy, and Observatory.

The names of these buildings themselves may not astound us. However, most of these historical buildings within just a few kilometers of each other are unique in different aspects. For example, Shaoshi Tower and Qimu Tower built in the Eastern Han Dynasty are the oldest buildings for national-level sacrifice and ritual in ancient China; Zhongyue Temple and Taishi Tower represent the most comprehensive architectural pattern for ancient rituals in China; Duke of Zhou's Shadows Measuring Platform and Observatory are the oldest observatories well preserved to this day; Songyang Academy, as a typical symbol of the vanished academic culture, is the earliest academy to spread Confucianism, worship Confucian sages and hold exams; Songyue Temple Pagoda, Shaolin Temple Architectural Complex and Huishan Temple record the development of Buddhism in China, and have a great impact on the shape and structure of numerous religious buildings over the past 1,000 years. These ancient buildings stand erect separately but echo each other.

The Historic Monuments of Dengfeng in "The Centre of Heaven and Earth" constructed over the course of nine dynasties including Han, Wei, Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing vividly illustrate the architectural styles in Central China over the past 2,000 years. They are marked by numerous types, high standards, long duration, rich connotation, and far-reaching impact, which are unprecedented in the world. They embody ancient China's buildings for ritual, religion, science & technology and education, boast the origin of long-term development of ancient China's building technology and building art, and truly reflect the views of ancient Chinese people on the universe and the aesthetics. As an oriental ancient architectural art center, they offer valuable physical testimony to the vanished traditional culture.
