论语十二章（子曰贤哉回也）

子曰：“吾与回言终日，不违，如愚。退而省其私，亦足以发，回也不愚。”

2.9 The Master said, “I talked with Hui for a whole day and he never disagreed with me, as if he were stupid. After he retired, I examined his behavior behind him and found him able to fully understand my teachings and apply them well. Sure, he is not stupid at all!”

[Comment] “回huí” refers to “颜回yán huí” who was Confucius' favorite disciple. His surname, given name, and courtesy names were “颜yán,” “回huí,” and “子渊zĭ yuān.” “省其私xĭng qí sī” means “to observe his behaviors and his words.” “发fā” connotes “发明fā míng” (to invent; invention) or “发挥fā huī” (to apply, to put into practice). “回huí (颜渊yán yuān)” was Confucius' favored disciple and is praised in many passages of The Analects.Unfortunately,he died young,probably around the age of thirty, which completely saddened the Master's heart.

[Reading] This section records Confucius' high praise of his most favored disciple, Yan Yuan. Obviously, as an educator, Confucius had a low opinion of those students who never disagreed with him and who did not seem to catch on quickly. But Confucius was also cautious not to jump to conclusions. As was demonstrated in this section, he quickly corrected himself after he had carefully observed Yan Yuan behind him.

颜回是孔子唯一只是表扬，没有任何批评的学生，而且觉得自己不如颜回贤能。这似乎不可思议！

孔子把颜回是为自己学说的接班人，可是早孔子而亡。夫子为之恸！呼之曰，天丧予天丧予！

孔子如此表彰的颜回，却是与孔子终日谈论，从来不提出不同意见的学生，孔子怀疑其愚钝。观整部论语，除了孔子和子贡对颜回的夸奖，并找不到颜回有什么特别的言行。难道是孔子对其过誉了吗？

辩论的时候，我们知道，很多不同观点，都是各说各话，其实并没有了解对方的观点。有一种情况，就是颜回完全接受了解孔子的思想，完全契合，于是不存在与孔子发生分歧的情况。

人的天赋不一样，弟子比老师贤能，从儒家人格修养的角度，完全可能。夫子夸赞颜回，是欣赏颜回天生的圣者气质。那么多学生，唯独称赞颜回，孔子视之为思想接班人，颜回怎么可能浪得虚名呢？
