Aristotle and His Famous Saying of Respecting Teachers

"Plato is dear to me,but dearer still is truth." is a famous saying of Aristotle, which not only reflects Aristotle's respect for his mentor Plato, but also reflects the love and persistent pursuit of truth of this encyclopedic scholar known as the master of ancient Greek philosophy.

Aristotle (384-322 BC) was a philosopher and scientist in ancient Greece. Born in Stagira, northern Greece, he studied at Plato's Academy in Athens for 20 years when he was young. After Plato's death, he left Athens school to give lectures in Athos, Asia Minor. From 343 BC to 336 BC, he was a teacher of Alexander, son of Philip, king of Macedonia. When Alexander ascended the throne and began the eastern expedition, he returned to Athens and founded a school called Lykeion to engage in teaching and research activities. The school he started was called peripateticism(逍遥派).After Alexander's death, Athens set off a climax of the anti Macedonian movement. Aristotle had to leave Athens because of his involvement. He died of illness the following year.

Aristotle was regarded by Marx and Engels as the greatest thinker and most learned person of the ancient times. His works cover wide-ranging areas such as philosophy, psychology, logic, rhetoric, literary criticism, physics, biology, and metaphysics. Generally, Aristotle followed many of Plato's philosophical concepts, which were shared by numerous educated and experienced men of his times, yet he differed from his teacher in many respects. He moved away from Plato's metaphysical beliefs, becoming increasingly concerned with science and practical matters of the world. Original and profound, his analyses exerted enormous influence on later generations of Western thinkers. Aristotle's thought is that it wavers between materialism and idealism, and finally falls into idealism and metaphysics. Later materialists and idealists inherited and developed his ideas from different angles.
