“Hagrid’s bringing him.”
“You think it — wise — to trust Hagrid with something as important as this?”
“I would trust Hagrid with my life,” said Dumbledore.
“I’m not saying his heart isn’t in the right place,” said Professor McGonagall grudgingly, “but you can’t pretend he’s not careless. He does tend to — what was that?”
A low rumbling sound had broken the silence around them. It grew steadily louder as they looked up and down the street for some sign of a headlight; it swelled to a roar as they both looked up at the sky — and a huge motorcycle fell out of the air and landed on the road in front of them.
If the motorcycle was huge, it was nothing to the man sitting astride it. He was almost twice as tall as a normal man and at least five times as wide. He looked simply too big to be allowed, and so wild — long tangles of bushy black hair and beard hid most of his face, he had hands the size of trash can lids, and his feet in their leather boots were like baby dolphins. In his vast, muscular arms he was holding a bundle of blankets.
“Hagrid’s bringing him.”
Dumbledore
“You think it — wise — to trust Hagrid with something as important as this?”
Hagrid?”
It grew steadily louder as they looked up and down the street for some sign of a headlight;
they look up and down the street,表示他们在这个街道上看来看去,不是上看下看
it swelled to a roar as they both looked up at the sky — and a huge motorcycle fell out of the air and landed on the road in front of them.
If the motorcycle was huge, it was nothing to the man sitting astride it.
A is nothing to b表示跟b比起来,a不算什么。it was nothing to the man,摩托车跟男人相比,摩托车不算什么。
sitting astride it,后置定语,修饰the man,表示跨坐在摩托车上的这个男人。
He was almost twice as tall as a normal man and at least five times as wide.
这里有两个倍数比较的说法, twice as tall as a normal man,一个正常人的两倍那么高,at least five times as wide至少又有五倍宽。
five times as wide后面有省略,它省略了as a normal man,正常人的5倍宽,但是英语之中因为忌讳重复和啰嗦,所以把five times as wide后面的as a normal man给省略掉了。
He looked simply too big to be allowed, and so wild—
他看起来简直是too big to be allowed,to be allowed字面理解是被允许的,在句中其实等同于 he looks simply too big to be possible,意思说大到不可能的地步,如果说一般人的体型有极限的话,那么他已经大到超过极限的程度,而且不光看起来很大,还so wild,外表看起来非常的粗野狂放。
Long tangles of bushy black hair and beard hid most of his face,
he had hands the size of trash can lids,
and his feet in their leather boots were like baby dolphins.
Were like baby dolphins,像小海豚那么大,这么大的一双脚,可见这是确实是一个非常huge的人。
In his vast, muscular arms he was holding a bundle of blankets.
