今天的片段来自美剧《初来乍到》(Fresh off The Boat)。

当父母的有时候会发现跟孩子讲道理未必是好的交易方式，得让他们自己试一试才行。

所谓的“言传身教”嘛，英语里就是teach by example。

I prefer teaching by example. 我更喜欢言传身教的做法。

换一种说法可以说：Why tell you if I can show you? 比起用嘴说，不如直接展示给你看。

相关的example用法还有make an example out of someone，用来形容刻意惩罚某人为别人树立一个前车之鉴，和杀鸡儆猴、杀一儆百、以儆效尤有差不多意思。
