故人入我梦，明我长相忆。

恐非平生魂，路远不可测。

魂来枫林青，魂返关塞黑。

A man can but try to banish his sorrow;

But when the loved one still lives on,

There remains that deep

Longing for him; now, from the miasma.

Of southern waters, no news comes to me of you;

so do you fill my dreams,

Which shows how I think of you,

Yet I worry whether this means

You are dead or alive; separated

By so great a distance, how may I know?

Then again I reason, as you are held in exile, how could

You be here?

I saw you coming through

The green woods, then over

The pass on the frontier

You turned and left me;

As you are in chains,

How can you come thus on wings?

I awoke, and the last Light

Of a dying moon shone over

The ceiling; I felt I could

Still see your face in the dim

Light; the waters flow deep,

And their waves rise high;

I Fear for your safety in all

The dangers that surround you.
