odd本身是“奇怪的，奇数”意思，加了s后odds就变成完全不同的词义，指“可能性，几率，胜算”，可指事情发生的可能性，也可指打赌时用数字表示的机会、可能性。

The odds are that you are going to fail.

你很可能会失败。

The odds are 5 to 1 that she will win.

她获胜的机会是五比一。

His odds are very poor after he sprained his wrist.

他扭伤了手腕，获胜的可能性极小。

3. the FBI backs off.

联邦调查局不要插手。

back带有“向后，后退”意思，而off带有“离开，撤走”意思，两个词组合起来back off变成动词，指“别插手；别干涉”

wind up 特指“最终沦落到；最终落得；(以…)告终”，过去式是wound up
