Wild goose chase

释义:

Wild /waɪld/: 狂热的,野生的;goose/ɡuːs/:鹅;chase/tʃeɪs/: 追逐,追赶;

In English: Pursuing something that seems to be pointless or unattainable.意思就是说:追逐一些无意义或者很难办到的事情;

来源:

It's believed that this phrase's origin is rooted in some type of 16th century horse racing.

a horse race in which the lead rider would be pursued by other riders, which is said to be similar to how geese flying in a formation will follow the one in the lead.

His scheme of being a movie star is a wild-goose chase.

Lynn:Here's my proposal for selling our new product teenagers.

Ben:But it's designed for adults. I'm afraid you've been on a wild goose chase.

Lynn:Not necessarily. Over 10 percent of our buyers are under 18.

Ben:Why would they want to use it?

Lynn:It's probably because a lot of them can't wait to grow up.
